NFIB urges "Yes" vote on Issue 2 regarding livestock care standards
The NFIB/Ohio Leadership Council voted to support Issue 2, which will appear on the November ballot. If it passes, it will help to ensure that Ohio’s food supply is safe, affordable and locally grown.
The issue, which was placed on the ballot through a bipartisan resolution passed in July 2009 by the Ohio Legislature, will create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. The board will establish guidelines for food animal care under the expertise of Ohio-based experts and will be made up of Ohioans, including farmers, veterinarians, scientists, consumers and food safety experts. It stands in stark contrast to proposals put forth in other states by extremist groups that set rigid and impractical rules for food animal housing and care.
In short, the board will enable Ohio livestock and poultry farmers to continue to provide excellent care to their animals, while also protecting Ohio's food supply and keeping affordable, locally-raised food available for consumers.
Issue 2 is a constitutional amendment that is being strongly supported by most in Ohio’s agriculture community. The NFIB/Ohio LC voted to endorse Issue 2 only after a special ballot of Ohio members showed clear support for the measure.
