BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Oct. 27, 2009—The National Federation of Independent Business said today that Greg Powell of fi-Plan Partners LLC in Birmingham is one of four regional Solveras/NFIB Small Business Champions for 2009.

Each year, NFIB, the nation’s leading small business association, singles out a small business owner in each state for special recognition and honors him or her with the prestigious state Small Business Champion award. The regional honors were conferred upon this year’s winners by each region’s state directors and public policy directors.

The four regional winners were honored by NFIB at a luncheon today in Washington, D.C.

“Greg is extremely deserving of this award,” said Rosemary Elebash, state director of NFIB/Alabama. “He is a true believer in the free-enterprise system, and he is 100 percent committed to our mission of promoting and protecting the right of our members to own, operate and grow their own businesses.”

“Greg left a very secure job at a large corporation to start a small business that provides jobs and financial security for his clients,” Elebash said. “Owning his own business has given him the resources to give back to his community.”

A four-year NFIB member, Powell serves on the NFIB/Alabama Leadership Council, a volunteer group that advises the association on small business issues, and he belongs to the NFIB Legislation Advisory Committee.

Since joining NFIB, Powell has helped recruit new members to the association, and he has worked to help NFIB/Alabama’s political action committee, the Save America’s Free Enterprise (SAFE) Trust, raise money to support candidates in the 2010 elections.

In addition to his work with NFIB, Powell is president of the Samford University Alumni Association and former chairman of the board of advisors to Samford’s Brock School of Business.

Powell also is active in the community. He serves on the advisory board of Camp Smile-a-Mile, an organization that provides free events for young cancer patients and their families, and he is chairman of the board of Special Equestrians, a therapeutic horseback riding program for people with special needs.

“Greg is the kind of member we know we can depend on,” Elebash said. “NFIB is the voice of small business in Montgomery, but it’s members like Greg who help our voice be heard.”
