It was his accountant who brought the benefits of Health Savings Account (HSA) eligible insurance plans to the attention of Dave Edmunds, owner of Falcon Auto Service Center in Peyton, Colo. He thought he might finally be able to offer his employees healthcare coverage—and that they could control the money they put into it.
Fast, Easy Setup
"We tried to find insurance on our own, but it didn’t go well," Edmunds says. "The NFIB Health Plans Call Center really stepped up the coverage, affordability and support when we needed it. Our sales representative was great. I never saw him face to face, but we received better service through e-mail than we did in person with the other carrier."
Locked-in Rates
In addition to providing affordable healthcare plans for NFIB members, their employees and their families, the NFIB Health Plans Call Center allows participants like Edmunds to lock in rates for up to three years. Edmunds locked in his company’s rates for three years in order to better plan for business expenses. "If I didn’t have those rates locked in, I’d be dealing with a 20 percent increase this year," Edmunds says.
Shared Responsibility
Edmunds was particularly pleased to be able to offer his employees an HSAeligible insurance plan. The plan gave participating employees the ability to establish tax-free health savings accounts for qualified medical expenses. In 2009, any taxpayer with an HSA-compliant insurance plan can contribute up to $3,000 a year ($5,950 for families). Unspent HSA funds roll over to the following year and accrue interest (like a 401k).
"It helps put the spending habits back into the customer’s lap instead of the health insurance company's," says Edmunds, who matches his employees’ contributions to their HSAs up to 2 percent of their gross earnings.
The HSA-eligible insurance plan also provides the benefit of putting an absolute limit on total medical expenses for the year. “If you have an 80/20 plan and you have a major medical problem that costs $50,000, it automatically costs you $10,000 out of pocket,” he says. “With a high-deductible plan, let’s say the deductible is $4,000. You’re going to pay the $4,000 out of pocket instead of $10,000. So for major medical, it actually costs you less.” But even with the high deductible, Edmunds says his HSA coverage is easier on the company pocketbook than traditional coverage, which is his favorite feature about the health plan.
Awesome Support
Since he started the HSA-eligible insurance plan, Edmunds has been impressed by the support provided by the NFIB Health Plans Call Center. "They're always checking up on us and e-mailing to see if everything has been OK, and that’s been awesome," he says. "It's worked so well for us that we’d like to get the word out and see other people use it, too."
