Fight Back! -- Unjustifiable increases in healthcare premiums can be challenged

Years ago, insurers promised small business owners and others reductions in healthcare premiums if they could include health status and claims history when writing coverage policies. When no major rate reductions happened as promised, NFIB joined a coalition of other groups a few years back to support passage of House Bill 1355, which took away claims history and health status from insurers’ calculations in setting premiums.

Some brokers are claiming that any increase in due entirely to HB 1355. This is simply not true.

Currently small business owners have the right to request the Colorado Division of Insurance act on their behalf should a small business owner believe the increase in premiums are excessive. The state will then require the individual company to justify their rate increases. Your request for help from the Division of Insurance can be filed on line at http://www.dora.state.co.us/insurance/index.htm
