Issues

  • Fight for Tax Fairness - Balancing the Budget

Small business is the key to any state economic recovery and any plan that does not recognize that is doomed to fail. In examining tax climate, state spending should be addressed and not just raising tax revenues.

  • Time to Restructure Michigan’s Tax System

Michigan needs to re-vamp its’ tax structure to improve the business climate for all Michigan business and stop relying on special deals and targeted tax incentives that benefit only a few “pet” industries such as movie production.

  • Just say NO to Higher Payroll Taxes

Allowing currently unqualified workers to receive Unemployment Insurance benefits will only dig the hole deeper for Michigan business and make it even more difficult for them to create the jobs Michigan needs to get back on track.

  • Control Spiraling Healthcare Costs in Michigan

The cost of health care continues to be the No. 1 problem for small business. With a new administration in Washington and a new group of lawmakers in Lansing due to term limits, health care legislation will take on new urgency in 2009. NFIB stands ready to play a part in such discussions to see what solutions may exist at the state level.

  • Fix Michigan's Broken Rules Process

Many of the problems faced by Michigan small business owners are the result of rules and regulations. Although these rules come from laws that enable state agencies to develop them, there is often a serious disconnect between what the Legislature intended in the law and what the state agency actually requires via the subsequent rules.

  • Halt Big Labor's Michigan Agenda

Big labor wants to change state laws to make it even tougher for a business and its’ employees to have a fair election on whether or not a union should represent them (called “card check” legislation). Mandatory paid leave for employees and generous benefit increases for Unemployment Insurance and Workers Compensation are also high on big labor's wish list.

  • Prevent Erosion of Liability Reforms in Michigan

Michigan’s legal system is now under full scale assault by the trial lawyers and special interests that want Michigan to become another "legal system lottery" state with large and uncontrolled jury awards. Most small businesses cannot afford to play the legal lottery game and NFIB will be working to protect past reforms and implement new ones.
