SMALL BUSINESS CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC UNION DEAL MAY BE START OF MEANINGFUL REFORM

Date: May 23, 2017

HARTFORD (May 23, 2017): In response to yesterday evening’s breaking news that union leaders had reached a tentative deal with the Governor’s office, the following statement may be attributed to National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Connecticut State Director, Andrew Markowski:

While we continue to believe that drastically reducing the size and scope of government must be included as part of a sustainable, long-term solution to Connecticut’s budget situation, we are encouraged by news reports that union leaders have agreed to negotiate areas of their contract that were previously non-starters.

For over a decade, the small business community has been warning lawmakers that state budget insecurity was plaguing their ability to hire additional people or expand their businesses. It was around that same time that our members began to focus on finding ways to do more with fewer resources. While that philosophy being applied to state government is long overdue, we are relieved to see the tide begin to turn.

The small business community will continue to monitor the situation closely and gather additional information as details become available, but this morning we are hopeful that this contract negotiation is just the beginning of major reform finally finding it’s way to Hartford.
