Main Street Calls on Governor Whitmer, Legislature to Improve Business Conditions in Michigan

Date: January 25, 2023

Following the State of the State Address, NFIB urges lawmakers to prioritize economic growth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LANSING, MI (Jan. 25, 2023) – This evening, following Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address, National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) State Director Amanda Fisher urged lawmakers to prioritize economic growth in the 2023 legislative session:

“With more than half of all small business owners anticipating worsening business conditions in the next six months, it’s incumbent on Governor Whitmer and the Legislature to prioritize economic growth. Unfortunately, the Governor and legislative majorities seem to think moving Michigan forward means reverting to the failed labor and economic policies of the past,” said Fisher. “The best way to help not only small business owners and their employees, but all Michiganders, is to enact common sense labor, energy, and tax policies like those that were put in place a decade ago. Michigan’s ongoing budget surpluses are proof that these reforms have been and are continuing to work. I do not understand why the Governor would want to take Michigan back to its lost decade.”

“Small business owners need a fair, level, and stable economic, regulatory, and labor environment,” continued Fisher. “NFIB members do not want government picking winners and losers with targeted programs, subsidies, and tax breaks; they especially don’t want their tax dollars used to do it. We continue to stand ready to work with the Governor, her cabinet members, and lawmakers to adopt policies that help spur greater economic growth and improve the business environment for small businesses on Main Streets across Michigan.”
