Letter in Support of H.R. 385, the Consumer Auto Relief (CAR) Act

February 2, 2009

The Honorable Michael D. Rogers
U.S. House of Representatives
324 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Congressman Rogers:

On behalf of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation's leading small business advocacy organization, I am writing to express our support for H.R. 385, the Consumer Auto Relief (CAR) Act.  This legislation seeks to stimulate the automotive industry by giving consumers a tax deduction on the purchase of a new vehicle.

With the deteriorating automotive market, this tax break will help to increase automotive sales and aid struggling dealerships by providing a significant incentive to consumers looking to buy a new vehicle.  It gives customers thinking about buying a new car this year a $7,500 tax deduction for the purchase of a new vehicle during the first 90 days after enactment, a $5,000 deduction for the next 90 days and finally a $2,500 deduction for a third 90 day period.

The CAR Act will give a major boost to the auto industry, especially local dealerships which serve as the largest employer in many communities.  America's small, community auto dealerships are more than just job providers. Most are deeply rooted in their communities, providing Little League sponsorships and engaging in important charitable activity.  H.R. 385 will help these local small businesses maintain their workforce and continue to play a vital role in their communities.

Thank you for introducing this legislation, and we look forward to working with you on this issue.

Sincerely,

Dan Danner
President and CEO
