Ohio BWC Announces A Third Billion Back To Employers

Date: March 13, 2017

Big News for Small Business Owners!

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) today proposed to return more than $1 billion back to Ohio’s private and public employers. The announcement was made by Administrator Morrison and Governor Kasich.

“The $1 billion in rebates announced earlier today by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is welcomed news to small-business owners, who make up the majority of state fund employers,” said Roger Geiger, Vice President and Executive Director for NFIB/Ohio.

“On behalf of our 25,000 members, NFIB/Ohio applauds the BWC’s strong fiscal management and continued efforts to return more of Ohio employers dollars back to them.  These latest rebates will again help to stimulate Ohio’s economy through reinvestment back into their businesses. Past BWC rebates have been used by small employers to expand their businesses, hire new people and create workplace safety programs.

This significant rebate exemplifies how Governor Kasich and Administrator Morrison are determined to make Ohio’s workers’ compensation system even more efficient.”

The proposal goes before the BWC board of directors this week and will receive final approval on April 28.

Items included in the proposal are a one-time rebate totaling about $1.1 billion for more than 200,000 private employers and also includes public taxing districts. Additionally, a greater investment in workplace safety programs will be made to help reduce workplace injuries. Details can be found here.

Most employers would see rebates of about 66 percent of their premium for the policy year ending June 20, 2016. The refund checks would be mailed to employers in early July pending approval.
