Earlier this week, NFIB/NY honored LeiLei Secor (Hagaman, NY), owner of Designed By Lei and winner of a $5,000 NFIB Young Entrepreneurship Foundation (YEF) scholarship. YEF scholarships are awarded to aspiring entrepreneurs and enable deserving high school seniors to continue to pursue their dreams of owning and operating a small business while attending post-secondary education.
NFIB/NY member Joann Jablonski of Cakes by Joann in Amsterdam, NY welcomed LeiLei and shared her tips for operating and growing a business. Cakes by Joann offers some of the most sought-after special occasion cakes, decadent desserts, gourmet cupcakes, cookies, brownies and cake pops in the Capital Region and surrounding counties.
On July 16, LeiLei will compete against four other finalists for an additional $15,000 scholarship to apply to her college tuition. At a ceremony in Washington, D.C., one student will be named the “2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year” and the runner-up will earn the “2014 Dan Danner Leadership Award.” Both awards acknowledge the dedication and successes that these students have achieved as entrepreneurs and budding small-business owners.
