NFIB Kicks Off “Small Business Challenge” with Congressman Walberg in Michigan

JACKSON, MI (August 7, 2013) —The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) launched its “Small Business Challenge” today as Congressman Tim Walberg spent “a day in the life” of a small business owner in Jackson, MI. Congressman Walberg joined SeaLandAire Technologies president David Sparks to participate in and experience all aspects of small business ownership, from daily operational and production tasks to managerial responsibilities.

“These events present a unique opportunity for NFIB members to have a voice in shaping the public policy issues that affect their businesses,” said Dan Danner, CEO of the NFIB. “Our members want to know that their elected representatives truly understand the needs of small business owners and will fight for policies that will positively impact their work and quality of life.”

Today’s event was the first in a nationwide campaign that will continue throughout the course of the 2013-2014 legislative session. Small business owners will spend time with their legislators, demonstrating the obstacles they face on a daily basis and educating them on the broader challenges of owning a small business in today’s environment.

“While Michigan is moving in the right direction on regs, our businesses are drowning in federal regulations and it is hindering their ability to grow and create jobs for Michigan families,” said NFIB Michigan State Director Charlie Owens. “We applaud Congressman Walberg for taking the Small Business Challenge, and for working to implement commonsense reforms to get our economy back on track.”

At the end of the challenge, Sparks and employees awarded Congressman Walberg with a “Certificate of Completion for the NFIB Small Business Challenge”

“Spending time with and learning from the hard-working Michiganders in my district is what keeps me motivated in Washington,” said Congressman Walberg. “Small businesses create the majority of jobs in my district, and they deserve policies that provide them with confidence and an environment in which they can thrive and grow.”

The next “Small Business Challenge” will take place at an NFIB member business in Bakersfield, CA with House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy.
