Augusta (November 22, 2013) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) today reacted positively to the latest jobs report for Maine and urged leaders to remain focused on growth.

“The small businesses that we survey every month tell us that what they need most are more customers.  That can only happen when more Mainers are working,” said NFIB State Director David Clough.
The State Department of Labor announced today that the jobless rate for October declined to 6.7 percent, the lowest level of unemployment since 2008.  It is part of a positive trend, said Clough, which policy makers in Augusta should try to maintain.

“Small businesses in Maine are struggling against some very damaging policies coming from Washington,” he said, referring to the disastrous health care law and a number of aggressive new regulations.  “The Governor and lawmakers can counteract some of that by sticking to a pro-growth agenda that builds confidence among small business owners and consumers.”

Clough credited Governor LePage with changing the tone in Augusta and pushing for lower taxes and new regulatory approach that features cooperation between businesses and bureaucrats.

“Maine is a small business economy and there should be bipartisan agreement in Augusta that lower taxes and more sensible regulations are right way forward,” he said.  “This is very good news for Maine but there is a lot more work to do.  The best way to help the poor and the unemployed is to create a stronger climate for small businesses in which they can invest, grow and create more job opportunities.”
