NFIB/Virginia State Director Nicole Riley released the following statement today in response to a visit by Governor McAuliffe to promote his Medicaid expansion plan:
“This is not a black-and-white issue. Despite what big business and Governor McAuliffe say, expanding Medicaid will not cure Virginia’s ills. The governor’s plan would, in fact, make things worse for Virginia’s small-business owners, their employees and their families.
“Our small-business members have looked at this issue from every perspective and believe expanding an underfunded, cumbersome and poorly administered program like Medicaid would be irresponsible. The bottom line is this: Does anyone really believe that Washington will continue to pick up 90 percent of new costs after 2020?
“With the federal government facing more than $17 trillion in debt, it seems unlikely that Washington will keep its promise. That means Virginia’s entrepreneurs and small-business owners–its job creators–will be on the hook for any budget shortfalls resulting from Medicaid expansion.
“Small businesses want a complete reform of Medicaid before tossing more money on a raging wildfire. Our members want as much coverage for as many as possible, but not at the risk of losing everything else.”
Riley spoke at a news conference today at Eavers Tire Pros, an NFIB member business in Fishersville.
NFIB/Virginia is the commonwealth’s leading small-business association with about 5,500 dues-paying members representing a cross section of Virginia’s economy.
