The regular session of the New Mexico Legislature ended March 18 with one thing left undone: A state budget to Gov. Susana Martinez’ liking.
For that reason, the governor has called lawmakers back for a special session beginning May 24 to draft a state spending plan acceptable to all. But, her proclamation, issued May 5, ordering them back includes eight other items for them to work on:
- Comprehensive tax reform
- Repeal of the taxpayers’ dividend fund
- Issuance of supplemental severance tax bonds
- Issuance of tax bonds for public schools
- Hearings on nominees for board of regents for higher education institutions
- Money for legislative retirement
- Money for administration of the courts
- Money for operation of the Legislature
Governor Martinez has been a strong small-business ally (click here for the end-of-session report). NFIB looks forward to working with her again on getting the state’s fiscal house in order without hurting the most important revenue-generators it will need to balance its books: Small-business owners.
