Albuquerque is Ground Zero for crippling experiments on employment regulations
Small business is used to having to battle it out at the Legislature. Today, a new battleground is emerging and NFIB is diligently figuring out how to defend our small businesses.
Albuquerque has become Ground Zero and a case study for employment regulations exclusively decided at the ballot box.
The Healthy Workforce Ordinance would require all employers to provide every employee within the city limits with paid sick leave. If approved by voters, the ordinance would not be subject to revision or compromise and would go into effect as is. Unless your business follows each provision of the proposed ordinance, you could be to be vulnerable to fines and/or litigation—even if you already offer paid leave.
NFIB’s Legal Center is reviewing the lawsuit recently filed to stop the ordinance as written from going to the voters this November. NFIB is engaging on small businesses’ behalf with other business groups in searching for solutions.
