Group Planning To Work With Federal Government On Issues Like Smart Roads, Highway Investments

As a new Congress begins work for the American people, issues of infrastructure and transportation development are top-of-mind for many. Truckinginfo reported that a group of American shippers, carriers, and retailers, which FedEx, Amazon, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Retail Federation, “have launched the Americans for Modern Transportation coalition,” which will lobby Federal officials and Congress “for improved transportation infrastructure and policy that will reflect the needs of modern businesses and consumers.” In a release, the group stated, “To continue moving America forward, infrastructure investment cannot simply be improved roads and bridges. We need to lay the groundwork for a modern transportation system.” Politico Morning Transportation reported that the coalition will advocate investment in the nation’s infrastructure “that goes beyond upgrades to bridges and roads” and extends to “combining infrastructure enhancements with efficient trucking and policies as well as incentives for better safety and fuel technology.” Some of the key issues the coalition seeks to address include “Safety, sustainability, and technology improvements such as Twin 33 trailers, smart road technologies, and increased investment in the Highway Trust Fund will support a productive and efficient interstate commerce system that works for all drivers.”

What This Means For Small Businesses

Businesses large and small rely on well-maintained roads, highways, and other infrastructure to keep their business running smoothly. Infrastructure and transportation concerns need to be addressed by lawmakers. It remains to be seen whether this newly-formed coalition will effectively advocate on behalf of America’s small businesses. However, the attention the group is bringing to the nation’s critical transportation needs may be a positive step towards meaningful action.
