End of Year Deadline to Replace Phones Extended

Date: June 19, 2016 Last Edit: June 27, 2016

A Public Service Commission rule that would have required any small businesses with more than 7000 square feet of space and a multi-line phone system to scrap their phones and buy a new system before the end of this year has been delayed. NFIB efforts have moved the compliance deadline out to the end of 2019 with the passage of legislation signed by Governor Snyder as Public Act 244 of 2016.

While small business has dodged the phone replacement bullet for now, NFIB has made it clear to the bureaucrats that caused this mess in the first place that the rule needs more changes before it can be considered for final implementation. In testimony before both the Senate and the House, NFIB has called on lawmakers to develop the rule with legislation and bypass the rules process entirely as the state agencies involved have made it clear that they are not up to the task.

NFIB will be working between now and the new deadline in 2019 to change this rule to reflect the concerns of small business owners instead of a “one size fits all” edict.
