Recently, NFIB/Maryland hosted a
series of Succession Planning seminars with NFIB Tax Counsel Chris Whitcomb.

Event attendees learned it’s never too
early to start planning and found the information to be very valuable,
regardless of where they were in their succession planning process. They liked
the fact that they received information from an unbiased source who wasn’t
trying to sell them a service.

For the early steps on planning Whitcomb recommended examining these questions:

  1. What do you want a succession plan to accomplish?
  2. When will the transition take place?
  3. How should the transition be accomplished?
  4. What are the triggering events?

He also recommended exploring family
and staff dynamics and potential areas of conflict.
