SENATOR JOHNSON TO SMALL BUSINESS: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

MILWAUKEE (August 25, 2016): The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) continued its efforts to educate lawmakers on the challenges faced by small business owners through its Small Business Challenge campaign. Today’s participant, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), is no stranger to the difficulties facing the small business community and has clearly shown that he understands the importance of continuing to publically advocate for a healthy and prosperous small business sector.

“Senator Johnson has fought aggressively on behalf of Wisconsin’s small business community.  Our members deeply appreciate his hard work and leadership, and we are grateful to have him home today to participate in our Small Business Challenge,” said NFIB Wisconsin state director, Bill G. Smith.

“We have full confidence in his ability to continue to shine light on the difficulties that small business owners are facing thanks to an astronomical increase in regulation and an unfavorable tax environment,” said Smith. “Not only is Senator Johnson a tremendous lawmaker, perhaps most importantly, he is a small business owner himself.”

NFIB’s Small Business Challenge is a national campaign that invites lawmakers to spend a day “on the job” at a small business in their community and allows them to experience firsthand the challenges small-business owners face, including day-to-day management, compliance, and tax issues. Today’s event was held in Darien at Royal Basket Trucks, a member of NFIB for over a decade.

“We take tremendous pride in our ability to evolve and strengthen as the market changes. At times government interference and over regulation have challenged our progress. Participating in today’s Small Business Challenge was an excellent opportunity to bring attention to the obstacles that hinder growth,” according to Tom Carney, President of Royal Basket Trucks. It is an honor to have him here today and be provided the opportunity to highlight the efforts of our employees and our plans for the future.”

Senator Johnson has been a member of NFIB for many years. His career in manufacturing allows the Senator to bring a unique perspective to Washington D.C. He believes that the ever expanding size, scope and cost of government is hindering growth in his beloved Wisconsin, as well as throughout the country.

“Growth is the number-one component of a solution to many of the nation’s challenges. Entrepreneurs and their future employees are ready for growth, but our nation’s uncompetitive tax code, its crushing burden of debt and a sense of hostility from government toward job creators stand in the way. This is the result of a dysfunctional Washington full of career politicians who do not understand small business owners, and are indifferent to the cost of excessive regulations,” said Senator Johnson. “Though I spent 31 years in the private sector as a manufacturer, I still found today’s experience during the Small Business Challenge valuable. I hope the NFIB can utilize this experience to help more lawmakers understand what it is like to own your own business. Then, perhaps, more of them will appreciate the work of our nation’s largest employer, small business.”
