Leadership Council Summer Meeting Includes POTUS Ponderings

Date: August 29, 2016 Last Edit: September 07, 2016

This past weekend, the NFIB/Texas Leadership Council (LC), a group of small business owners who provide direct NFIB membership input and counsel into the legislative and public policy relations agenda of NFIB, convened in Austin. We began our meeting with a trip out to Oasis, a local restaurant and destination for catching a beautiful sunset on Lake Travis.

The next day began with our non-partisan “POTUS Ponderings for Small Biz” theme that was complete with full size cutouts of the current presidential nominees and bi-partisan cookies made by local baker My Sweet Jules. The meeting agenda included updates from NFIB VP of State Public Policy Steve Woods and NFIB LC Member and National Board Member Kurt Summers who discussed the latest happenings in Washington D.C. The day continued on with staff updates on our upcoming programs and initiatives including the upcoming Learn@Lunch series, Small Business Day at the Capitol 2017, and preparation for the 85th Legislative Session.

Ruth Hughs, Texas Workforce Commissioner (TWC) Representing Employers, spoke to the LC on important updates regarding Texas workforce issues. The time she spent with these business owners was invaluable in providing more detail on current programs, updates the TWC is making to the website and resources, and answering questions. The meeting was rounded out with insight from bi-partisan political consultants into the current elections and the LC providing feedback on state endorsements. Overall, it was a successful meeting and discussion of small business priorities in Texas.
