Gov. Edwards Renews Minimum Wage Hike Push

Date: April 18, 2017

Gov. Edwards made it clear on the campaign trail that he intended to push for a minimum wage increase if he was elected. In 2016, the proposal to hike the state’s base wage failed, but the governor is renewing his efforts this year

WBRZ TV reported that Gov. Edwards announced a minimum wage hike was part of his plan for the 2017 legislative session. He’s working with Sen. Troy Carter on a proposal that would follow the same terms as last year’s bill: The minimum wage would be increased from the federal rate of $7.25 per hour to $8 on Jan. 1, 2018 and then again to $8.50 in 2019.

NFIB/LA State Director Dawn Starns told WBRZ TV, “We feel that small businesses are under attack. We’re facing tax increases at every turn… All of these things are going to affect the consumer, all of these things get passed down. We have to ask ourselves what are we trying to do?”
