TOPEKA,
Jan. 14, 2014–Dan Murray, state director of the National Federation of
Independent Business, made the following statement today in advance of Gov. Sam
Brownback’s State of the State Address:

“Since
he took office, Governor Brownback’s leadership on tax policy has helped
promote small-business growth and strengthen our economy. Our state has added
over 45,000 jobs. Under his leadership, our unemployment rate has fallen from
over 7 percent when he assumed office to 5.1 percent today, giving us the 10th
lowest rate in the country, but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us.

“Our
members want to thank Governor Brownback for resisting the temptation of
Washington’s bait-and-switch Medicaid expansion. It might sound like a good
deal in the short term, but longer term, it will inevitably lead to higher
taxes, especially on small businesses, and make things worse for Kansas’
ecomony and working families.

“We’re
also looking to him to join legislative leaders in holding the line on any
attempts to raise the state’s minimum wage, a well-meaning but wrong-headed
strategy that economists say would actually lead to fewer jobs for those who
need them.”

NFIB/Kansas
is the state’s leading small-business association, with 4,200 member businesses
representing a cross section of the economy.
