STATEMENT: Put the Brakes on NC Medicaid Expansion

Date: January 11, 2017

Gregg Thompson, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement today in response to Governor Cooper’s plan to fast-track Medicaid expansion in North Carolina:

“This would be a difficult issue to address under even the best of circumstances, and Governor Cooper’s effort to push something through before President Obama leaves office, and before the General Assembly can take a look at it, isn’t even close to the best of circumstances.

“Despite what the governor says, expanding Medicaid would not cure North Carolina’s ills, but it would make things worse for small-business owners, their employees, and their families.

“Our small-business members have looked at this issue from every perspective and believe expanding an underfunded, cumbersome, and poorly administered program like Medicaid would be irresponsible. The bottom line is this: Does anyone really believe that Washington will continue to pick up 90 percent of new costs after 2020?

“With the federal government facing over $19 trillion in debt, it seems unlikely that Washington will keep its promise. That means health-care providers and ordinary taxpayers—especially small businesses—will be on the hook for any budget shortfalls resulting from Medicaid expansion.”
