Small Business Still Reeling from Workers' Comp Rate Hike

Date: October 04, 2016 Last Edit: October 05, 2016

October 4, 2016, Tallahassee – The following is a statement from NFIB/Florida Executive Director Bill Herrle on the NCCI acceptance of the Florida Insurance Commissioner’s 14.5% workers’ compensation rate increase:

“Today marked the next milestone in a massive workers’ compensation rate hike that will undoubtedly hurt small businesses by threatening their ability to keep their doors open and employ Floridians.”

“It is now up to the legislature to find a way to make the workers’ compensation system work again for employees and their employers. We will be looking for a clear statement from the legislature when they convene in November that they are committed to restoring a stable workers’ compensation market and it won’t be a moment too soon, because the first rate hike bills go out December 1st.”

“The regrettable part of all of this is that over two thirds of the rate hike goes to trial lawyer fees, not injured workers.”
