Indiana small business owners may soon be paying more at the pump.
In April, the Indiana Senate approved a plan 34-13 that would hike the gas tax by 10 cents a gallon. Meanwhile, the price of a license plate for commercial vehicles would rise to $100.
“Today’s passage of House Bill 1002 is an important step in our effort to establish a sustainable, long-term road funding plan for Indiana,” said Sen. President Pro Tem David Long in a statement. “Taking care of our transportation infrastructure supports our growing economy and positions us to maintain our reputation as the Crossroads of America.”
Gov. Eric Holcomb has called long-term transportation funding a key priority this session.
By 2018, the gas tax would be 28 cents per gallon, while diesel would cost motorists 22 cents.
Earlier this year, NFIB Indiana members split almost evenly on this member ballot question and therefore, NFIB Indiana does not have a position, according to State Director Barbara Underwood. Customarily, members must demonstrate a significant majority on an issue for NFIB to take a position.
You can expect more changes to the bill.
“Today’s vote, however, does not mean that the work on this bill is finished. House Bill 1002 will head to a Conference Committee, where differences between the House and Senate versions of the legislation will be ironed out,” Long added.
Session is slated to end April 29, and lawmakers are still writing a two-year budget.
