Why Illinois Small Business Won Big at the Ballot Box on Election Day

Election 2016 was one for the record books!  For many, the election of Donald Trump as
president was a surprise. Here in Illinois, the election resulted in a shift in
the makeup of the Illinois General Assembly.

Long-time Speaker of the House, Michael Madigan, lost his
super-majority and thus his ability to override Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto
pen.

When the new legislators take office in 2017, the Illinois
House Republicans will hold 50 seats to the Democrats’ 67. The Illinois Senate
Republicans will hold 22 seats to the Democrats’ 37.

NFIB/Illinois was fully engaged in the election, giving cash contributions to
pro-small-business candidates, running radio ads in key races and informing our
members of our endorsed candidates through our extensive Voter Guide and GOTV
postcards.

In all, NFIB/Illinois’ political arm endorsed 59 candidates with 54 winning
their state legislative races.

Now, the hard work starts. Illinois has
real financial and economic problems and it’s time for both sides to come
together and pass meaningful reforms that will put Illinois back on the path to
prosperity.
