Georgia's Small Businesses Survive Another Legislative Session

Date: May 16, 2017

Georgia’s small businesses survived yet another legislative session as well as the I-85 bridge collapse.  As we now enter into the hot Georgia summer months, things have been heating up politically as the eyes of the nation have been watching the special election in the Georgia 6th Congressional district to replace Tom Price who President Trump appointed to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.  While pundits will spout off theories and predictions, NFIB has been focused on making sure the issues impacting small businesses are not overlooked.  In addition, after looking at both candidate’s positions on the issues, NFIB’s Federal PAC endorsed Karen Handel for the special election runoff taking place on June 20th.

Things are also starting to heat up politically in state politics as well as three people have already announced and filed paperwork to run for Governor in 2018.  Secretary of State and NFIB member Brian Kemp was the first to announce he was running the Georgia’s highest state office. Secretary Kemp was followed by state Senator Hunter Hill and Lt. Governor Casey Cagle who also both announced they are running.

There is expected to be a very high turnover in the legislature and contested races for all the statewide offices in 2018.  It will be imperative that we make sure the issues and concerns of small businesses are prioritized in these races and that we know where the candidates stand on these issues.

Governor Nathan Deal Signs HB 87 Into Law

Sponsored by Rep. Brad Raffensperger, HB 87 will allow the Secretary of State’s Office to create a process to allow for three-year registrations for most types of business organizations, including non-profits, partnerships, and limited liability companies.  This bill was supported by NFIB and we appreciate Rep. Raffensperger for sponsoring this legislation and also appreciate Governor Nathan Deal signing it into law.
