What Will 2017 Hold for Texas Small Businesses?

Date: December 15, 2016

It’s beginning to look a lot like……..Legislative Session?

Greetings NFIB friends and family, as you enjoy this holiday season, you must know that very soon your state senators and representatives will be convening for the 85th Legislative Session. I’m not trying to put a damper on the season, but rather put you on notice that the Texas Legislature will convene January 10th and begin considering an estimated 7,000 individual bills – many of which could dramatically alter the way you do business. It’s been said many times over that neither man nor beast can rest comfortably while the legislature is in session.

As a member of NFIB/Texas you can rest a little easier than most because your lobby team in Austin has your back. Last session we achieved a 25 percent cut in your franchise tax and killed every single piece of legislation we opposed. We can’t do it alone. We need your desktop activism, phone calls, and emails to your elected officials when big things are happening at the Texas Capitol.

How can you keep up with all the activities in Austin? Simple, watch for emails and notices coming from us about how you can work to save Texas businesses. Also, catch The Spilman Report, by NFIB/Texas Legislative Director Annie Spilman, who will be producing a bi-weekly update on the happenings at the Capitol. Her detailing legislative activities impacting small business in Texas will be the must-read report of the year. Annie has extensive experience working the Hall of the Capitol with eight legislative sessions under her belt and has vast expertise on the legislative process and the inner workings of the Texas Legislature. Nothing gets past her during this very busy 140 days of mayhem.

Thank you for putting your trust in the NFIB/Texas Team in Austin and for letting us represent you and your interests in the Texas Legislature. We consider it an honor to work hard “To promote and protect the right of our members to own, operate and grow their businesses.”

Will Newton

NFIB/Texas Executive Director
