Study: South Dakota Ranks High in Economic Performance and Outlook

Date: May 11, 2017

American Legislative Exchange Council’s annual report puts state in Top 10, Top 12

In the most recent edition of its annual Rich States, Poor States report, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) once again puts South Dakota at the top of its Economic Outlook and Economic Performance rankings for 2017.

The Economic Performance Ranking is a backward-looking measure based on the state’s performance in the areas of state gross domestic product, absolute domestic migration, and nonfarm payroll employment. South Dakota was in the top 10 in this area, ranking 8th on the list when compared to 49 other states.

The Economic Outlook Ranking is a forward-looking forecast based on the state’s standing in 15 areas of state policy. These include variables such as personal and corporate income tax rates, property tax burden, sales tax burden, and recently legislated tax changes. South Dakota came in 12th on the list.

Each of these factors is influenced directly by state policy. NFIB will continue to remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure good public policy that fosters the ability for businesses to grow in this state.
