SMALL BUSINESS TO LAWMAKERS: FOLLOW GOVERNOR HOGAN’S EXAMPLE

ANNAPOLIS (February 2, 2016): On the Eve of Governor Hogan’s second state of the state, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is hoping the Governor’s message will resonate with lawmakers that have recently floated proposals that have left the small business community wondering if the climate in Maryland stands a chance of improving with a politically divided legislature focused on increasing mandates.
“Governor Hogan spent much of his campaign discussing the important contributions that the small business community makes to our economy. His first year in office we have seen him back up his promises with actions like eliminating the rain tax and reducing tolls on the Bay Bridge. We are certainly pleased with the outcome thus far,” according to NFIB Maryland state director, Mike O’Halloran. “That being said, in order to bolster our fiscal environment, legislators must build on the progress made so far. The Governor cannot unilaterally correct years of mismanagement and we hope that Senate and House members listen carefully to his suggestions tomorrow afternoon.”

Legislative leaders in the House and Senate have publicized their desire to tackle mandates including equal pay, paid leave and retirement plans to the chagrin of small business owners that have been struggling to economically recover in the wake of the great recession. On the other hand, Governor Hogan has unequivocally stated his priorities lie in reducing the tax burden on the middle class and giving Marylanders the opportunity to prosper.

“When you contrast the main concerns of the General Assembly and the Governor side by side, you see a discrepancy that cannot be ignored. The Governor is ready to reduce taxes and put money back into the pockets of hard working people, including small business owners, while legislative leaders would rather pile on mandate after mandate,” continued O’Halloran. “More mandates will cripple our members and result in a reduction of jobs in our state. There are plenty of policies that allow economic success to be viable and thanks to Governor Hogan’s example, law makers have the perfect blue print to begin with.”
