"We work with the resource center at NFIB to understand what’s going on with legislation. We just kind of keep an eye on everything, so we can focus on running our business day-to-day."

Name: Eric Donaldson

Business: Hot Shot Delivery, Inc.

Location: Houston

Employees: 14

Eric Donaldson started working for his father’s delivery service 12 years ago, which has been serving the Houston community since 1978. Now serving as president of the company, he joined NFIB because he wanted his business to have an ally and a strong advocate fighting for his interests.

How has being an NFIB member benefited your small business?

There’s a number of ways. I’ve met some tremendous people throughout the business community. I’ve learned a ton, and I think it’s made me a better businessperson because of their education resources like their magazine, their speakers or various events they put on.

What are some concerns you have as a small business owner?

I think some of the regulation that’s gone on, and the shift in policy toward businesses in Washington has been a challenge. We don’t know what’s going to happen in regard to things like the minimum wage or changes in the way exempt and nonexempt employees are treated. You prepare for those changes, and do the best that you can do.

What are some of the biggest challenges facing Texas small businesses?

Texas is growing in a lot of ways, so we have some struggles with infrastructure. As the population continues to increase, you have a shift in demand and revenue, so you have to definitely work smarter, which is challenging. Learning how to serve more people with the same amount of resources is a challenge, and I think that goes for the private sector and public sector.

How do you adapt those challenges?

We gather data with our employees and our human resource staff. We look to see what our numbers are like, and how a change would affect us financially so we can be prepared for it in our budget. We work with the resource center at NFIB to understand what’s going on with legislation. We just kind of keep an eye on everything, so we can focus on running our business day-to-day.

Is there anything Texas lawmakers could do to help your business grow?

I don’t think it’s government’s responsibility to help a business grow. I think that they can hurt it, but outside of continuing to be mindful of small businesses in Texas, I don’t think there’s one thing that the Legislature could do to make my business grow.
