NFIB Tennessee Member Spotlight: John Sharpe, Staff Source

Date: February 13, 2017

John Sharpe was inspired to start his business because he believed he could deliver services more effectively that the company where he was working at the time. He felt the market needed a staffing and recruiting firm that was more service-oriented and value-driven, and his decision to strike out on his own paid off.

Staff Source was founded in 2004 and has grown to employ 23 people across multiple locations in Tennessee and Alabama. They specialize in recruiting and staffing for administrative, financial, and IT positions.

“The venture of opening a small business is high-risk and challenging, but it has been a rewarding experience,” Sharpe says. “I have enjoyed embracing the challenge of creating and executing my plans in a competitive marketplace to help my company grow.”

It helps being located in Tennessee, which Sharpe says is a great place to do business.

“The consecutive run of governors from the private sector has been instrumental in impacting businesses like mine in a positive way,” he says. “Randy Boyd, the commissioner of economic and community development, drove multiple recruitment initiatives during his time in office, which has helped Tennessee become first in the nation for advanced industry job growth, as well as generating almost 50,000 new job commitments for the state.”

Sharpe says joining NFIB has helped him as a business owner because of its advocacy efforts, as well as the information and access provided. “NFIB educates us about legislative initiatives and also gives us better access to legislators, which allows more leverage and voice for small business owners,” he says.
