Michigan Improves Small Business-Friendliness Ranking

Michigan’s
comeback continues, and it has landed the state on a list of the most
entrepreneur-friendly states in the nation.

 Michigan
ranked the 12th friendliest state in the nation on the Small Business Policy
Index 2016, an annual report published by the Small Business &
Entrepreneurship  Council scoring a 65.499, just ahead of Utah (No. 13)
and behind Colorado (No. 11).

 The
survey uses 50 measures, of which 25 are tax-related, 18 focus on rules and
regulations, five address fiscal issues and two focus on government
effectiveness.

This
year’s ranking represents an increase for Michigan, which ranked No. 14 on the most recent
SBE Council report.

 “The
Small Business Policy Index provides the most comprehensive comparison of state
policies that affect entrepreneurship, small business and investment,” said
Raymond J. Keating, SBE Council’s chief economist and author of the study. “And
make no mistake, tax, regulatory, government spending and other governmental
performance and cost measures matter state by state. They have real impacts not
only on entrepreneurship, investment, small businesses and their workers, but
naturally therefore, on the overall economy of each state.”

Here
are the top 12 states:

  1. Nevada
  2. Texas
  3. South Dakota
  4. Wyoming
  5. Florida
  6. Washington
  7. Alabama
  8. Arizona
  9. Ohio
  10. Indiana
  11. Colorado
  12. Michigan
