NFIB New York Member Profile: Joshua Spiegel of Transborder Global Freight Systems

Name: Joshua Spiegel

Business: Transborder Global Freight Systems

Location: Round Lake, New York

 Employees: 70

Logistics are a family business for Joshua
Spiegel. He inherited his company Transborder Global Freight Systems from his
father, and his grandfather founded this business before him. Spiegel started
out mowing lawns, and now he serves as the company’s executive vice president.

While logistic industry juggernauts UPS and
Fedex were buying up local companies left and right about 20 years ago,
Transborder managed to carve out its own existence, but not without
weathering an array of challenges, Spiegel said.

The biggest regulatory obstacles came after 9/11
when the federal government cracked down on items being imported and exported
from the U.S.

“It was a whole new game with the threat of
terrorism, and we had to adapt to it,” Spiegel said.

Now that the company has adjusted to those
regulations, Spiegel’s complaints aren’t that different from other small
business owners in New York: the taxes are overwhelming.

“New York is one of the unfriendliest states in
the arena of taxes,” Spiegel said.

Spiegel has been an NFIB member since 2013,
which allows him to stay up-to-date on issues such as taxes, and the
partnership has also guided him through sensitive topics like problems with
workers compensation, he said.

“Embracing resources like that is one of the
best things a business owner can do,” Spiegel said. “You don’t have to do it on
your own.”
