Louisiana House GOP Says Spending Reform Comes First

Date: April 04, 2017

While tax reform promises to be a major topic of discussion—as well as a top priority for NFIB/LA—during the upcoming session, House Republicans have also made it clear they intend to tackle the state’s spending problems first and foremost.

Following a delegation retreat last month, House GOP Chairman Lance Harris said the group was “tightknit” in their determination to focus on belt-tightening and rolling back Gov. Edwards’ proposed budget to depend on current year spending.

“I think we have enough money,” Rep. Harris told USA Today. “We have a lot of systemic problems to solve before we add layers of new taxes on top of that.”

At this writing, details are still pending on the House GOP’s plan to tackle both tax and spending reform. But hopefully, the combined focus on the two this legislative session can be a step toward getting Louisiana back on track and off the perpetual financial cliff.
