State received the highest grade for second straight year.
Indiana’s Manufacturers See Another Record Year
When it comes to its manufacturing environment,
Indiana is still tops. Not only did the state maintain its A grade, it
experienced “a record year for manufacturing production,” according to a new report.
Conexus Indiana’s 2016 Manufacturing &
Logistics Report Card received the highest grade among its midwestern
neighbors, joined by Michigan, which also received an A. The state scored an A
in global reach and tax climate, but received a B+ in productivity and
innovation.
“Advanced manufacturing appears to be very
diverse in Indiana, and hence these sectors could withstand cyclical changes
better than most states,” the report’s authors noted. “Over the past decade,
job growth in the advanced manufacturing sectors is clustered around STEM and
white collar-related occupations. The growth in advanced manufacturing can be
compared with increases in human capital, which remains a concern for Indiana.
The state received its lowest grade, a D+, for
its worker benefit costs. “Health care expenditures through relative higher
premiums remain a major factor that contributes to lower grades in Indiana’s
worker benefit costs,” according to the report.
