Did Indiana's Next Budget Just Get a Boost?

Date: April 18, 2017

Did Indiana just find some extra money for its next biennial budget?

According to the most recent revenue forecast, the state is on track to bring in $200 million more than originally expected for what is shaping up to be a $16 billion budget.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb cautioned that the actual surplus could end up being far less than that projection, however.

“While we are seeing moderate growth in revenues across our state, we must be cautious about the fact that projections have not always mirrored actual revenue experience,” Holcomb said in a statement. “Hoosiers may be assured my administration will continue to exercise strong financial management and good fiscal stewardship as we strive to deliver great government service at great taxpayer value.”

It remains unclear how—or even if—the news impacts a potential gas tax, which is still up in the air.

“The debate hasn’t changed, it’s just sharpened,” said State Sen. Luke Kenley of Noblesville.
