Could Iowa Be Next to Eliminate Its Income Tax?

Date: January 19, 2016

Iowa state senator backs idea.

For the nation, November’s presidential election is a major event for obvious reasons.

But for Iowans, the upcoming elections could be doubly momentous: They could ignite a surge of support to eliminate the state’s income tax.

At least that’s what state Senate Republican leader Bill Dix is hoping for.

“In this global market we’re engaging in today, (income tax elimination) plays a major role in helping small business owners be more competitive, helps them with their investments and productivity,” he says. “There’s going to be more potential for growth and creating career opportunities that Iowans are craving.”

Currently, nine states do not have an income tax.

Dix doubts there’ll be serious debate on the issue during the regular legislative session, with Democrats in the Senate showing “little to no interest” in moving forward with income tax reduction, he says. But Dix sees this issue becoming a centerpiece of the state’s GOP platform this election.

“I believe we’re in a strong position,” he says. “For me, it’s central to produce a climate here where job creators, people willing to make investments, can feel optimistic and make investments and where the regulatory environment is favorable.”

The fastest growing states have either low or no income taxes, Dix says. A study by the Tax Foundation ranked Iowa 40th in the country for business tax climate.

“We have a lot of potential and opportunities here,” Dix says. “Common sense tells you it would make Iowa a magnet for jobs and businesses and create more opportunities for Iowans.”

Officials from other states, including Arizona, are also hoping to garner broad support for the elimination or reduction of the tax.
