SMALL BUSINESS BREATHES HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF AS SENATE RECESSES WITHOUT CRIPPLING CONSUMERS

TRENTON (June 30, 2016): The following statement may be
attributed to Laurie Ehlbeck, NFIB New Jersey state director regarding the
Senate recessing this afternoon without raising the gas tax:

The small business community is elated to know that we
will not wake up tomorrow to an astronomically high gas tax. From the
beginning, NFIB has called for extensive changes to be made to the
transportation trust fund and the mechanisms for which we fund infrastructure
improvements across the state and we are certainly hopeful that lawmakers will
now take the time to do the hard work of overhauling our existing policies.

The bills that have gone before both the Senate and the Assembly each included
tax reductions that would help to improve New Jersey’s economy and instead of
playing economic shell games by reducing some taxes and raising others, we hope
to see the tax incentives separated out into their own bill. We understand
completely the importance of addressing the funding of infrastructure
improvements throughout the state, but that does not mean that the taxpayers of
New Jersey should have to settle for a trade-off.

After a week of divisiveness and misinformation, it’s
time for everyone to take a deep breath and get back to focusing on why they
were sent to Trenton in the first place. It is incumbent on lawmakers on both
sides of the aisle to be good stewards of our tax dollars and after the fierce
public outcry over the gas tax increase, hopefully they will reflect on ways to
make our government leaner, more efficient, and ultimately cheaper for their
constituents.
