Utah's Congressional Guardians of Small Business Named

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 21, 2016—At a ceremony held at the U.S. Capitol last week, the National Federation of Independent Business honored Utah’s entire delegation with Guardian of Small Business awards for their outstanding support of America’s small-business owners during the 114th Congress.
“Many elected officials claim that they are champions of small business, but our Guardian Award shows our members and other small-business owners who is really fighting for them,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan.  “Based on their voting record, these members of Congress are the most reliable advocates for small business in Washington.”
Candace Daly, NFIB’s Utah state director, singled out U.S. Rep. Mia Love for special praise. “Mia Love promised to be a friend of small business, and she has shown her word is her bond. On 14 issues of importance to small business during the 114th Congress, Congresswoman Love has supported Main Street, mom-and-pop shops 100 percent of the time. I can’t stress enough how valuable it is to have fighters for small businesses like Congresswoman Love. There are still too many in Congress who fail to make the fundamental distinctions between a small and a big business and mistakenly think helping the largest ones is helping the smaller ones. Mia Love’s actions show she’s a proven champion of small business. All of our other Utah winners have past records of support for small business, but this was Congresswoman Love’s first term, and it’s heartening to see her economic outlook begins on Main Street.”

The Guardian of Small Business is NFIB’s most prestigious award. It is reserved for lawmakers who vote consistently with NFIB on the key issues identified by small-business owners. NFIB tracks the votes of every member of Congress. House members and Senators who vote with NFIB members at least 70 percent of the time are eligible for the Guardian Award. “NFIB is honored to present these members of Congress with this award,” Duggan said.

Attending the ceremony to receive hers was U.S. Rep. Mia Love, pictured below. Other winners from Utah were:
  • Sen. Orrin Hatch
  • Sen. Mike Lee
  • Rep. Rob Bishop
  • Rep. Chris Stewart
  • Rep. Jason Chaffetz
