PEACE OF MIND ON THE HORIZON FOR SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY

HARTFORD (June 20, 2016): Legislation requiring state agencies to further consider and study the impact proposed regulations may have on the small business community was back on lawmakers agenda’s today. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), who supported the original bill, is applauding legislators in both the Senate and the House for the courage to address the issue the second time around by overriding Governor Malloy’s veto of Senate Bill 302, An Act Concerning The Impact of Proposed Regulations On Small Business.

“It’s vital that lawmakers have a better grasp on the impact their policy changes have on the small business community. Legislation requiring that state agencies study the potential harmful impact of new regulations prior to their enactment is a great sign to the small business sector that Hartford values the contribution they make to our economy,” according to NFIB Connecticut state director, Andrew Markowski. “No matter how well intended, regulations that increase administrative costs and complicate record keeping for the smallest of employers can have a detrimental impact on a business’s ability to hire additional people or expand operations. Overriding the veto today is a great step in bridging the divide between state government and small employers.”

The bill, which passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support, was vetoed by Governor Malloy. He cited an undue burden on state agencies that would have to study the impact of future legislation, however he stated he supported the spirit of the measure.

“The Governor is in a difficult position here. On the one hand, he has committed to better protect the small business community from being disproportionately impacted by regulations at the state level but on the other, he is facing the necessary reality of dramatically reducing the size of state government,” continued Markowski. “We certainly don’t envy his position but ultimately we must fight for what is best for the small business community in Connecticut and this legislation will allow lawmakers and state agencies to clearly understand the regulatory side effects on small business owners. We thank each and every elected official that had the foresight and conviction to put this bill into law.”
