NFIB Reacts to Governor Brown Vetoing SB 654
This bill would have targeted small businesses with another mandate
SACRAMENTO, Calif., September 30, 2016 – Following Governor Jerry Brown vetoing Senate Bill 654 (Jackson) today, NFIB California State Executive Director Tom Scott issued the following statement on behalf of our 22,000 small business members:
“SB 654 (Jackson) would have directly targeted small businesses at a time when California already mandates a long list of family-friendly leaves of absence on employers. NFIB opposed this bill because it would have created a significant hardship for small businesses with a limited number of employees who do not have the ability to operate with even one or two staff members on leave for over a month. It is also important to note that although the bill applied to employers with more than 20 employees—it aggregated the number of employees one has at multiple locations, creating challenges for small business owners with multiple locations which may only have a few employees at each site.
“We are grateful Governor Brown vetoed this bill since it would have added to the piling-on effect of additional costs, mandates and regulations from our aggressive legislature felt by small business owners across the state. This veto represents a glimmer of hope following what has been a long, painful legislative year for small business.”
