California Small Business Struggling Under Weight of $15 Wage

Date: May 31, 2017

Faces of $15, a project backed by Employment Policies Institute, chronicles the plight of dozens of California business owners as they deal with the sky-high mandated minimum wage.

While the site documents stories from small business owners around the country from Washington to New York, California by far dominates other states.

“The real Faces of $15 are the business owners who’ve been forced to close their doors, and the employees who’ve lost their jobs,” Michael Saltsman, managing director at EPI, told Forbes.

Farley’s on 65th, a restaurant in Emeryville, had to increase the cost of its food and drink by as much as 20 percent, according to the site. Likewise, he had to lay off two employees.

“Policymakers shouldn’t be fooled by labor’s rose-colored rhetoric on a new wage mandate,” Saltsman told Forbes.
