California Ranks #2 On Latest ‘Judicial Hellholes’ List
California continues its legacy of leading the nation with hostile, predatory legal climate

SACRAMENTO, Calif., December 15, 2016 –
The American Tort Reform Foundation issued its 2016-2017 Judicial Hellholes report today, naming civil courts in California among the nation’s “most unfair.”

“It is no secret the State of California leads the nation with its hostile legal climate which rewards predatory litigation on the backs of struggling small businesses across the state. Our state being ranked the #2 judicial hellhole in the nation is certainly no commendation to be proud of,” commented Tom Scott, NFIB California State Executive Director.

American Tort Reform Association President
Tiger Joyce added, “With both this annual report and a year-round website, our Judicial Hellholes program since 2002 has been documenting troubling developments in jurisdictions where civil court judges systematically apply laws and court procedures in an unfair and unbalanced manner, generally to the disadvantage of defendants.”

“This year, ranked second only to junk science-embracing, monster verdict-generating St. Louis is perennial hellhole California, where lawmakers, prosecutors and plaintiff-friendly judges seemingly conspire to expand civil liability inexorably, inviting and even welcoming the nearly 1 million new lawsuits filed there each year,” Joyce continued.

The Golden State is indeed just that for personal injury lawyers seeking riches at the expense of employers, consumers and taxpayers. Lawmakers, prosecutors and judges have long aided and abetted this massive redistribution of wealth. By enacting more than 800 new laws every year, legislators and the governor make it all but impossible for California residents and businesses to stay current and thus avoid being targeted by the nearly 1 million new lawsuits filed here annually.
