Tempe, Arizona Ranks as One of America’s Best Downtowns

Good news for small business owners in Tempe—Phoenix’s smaller neighbor is getting national publicity for its downtown livability, development and culture.

Tempe ranks number seven in a new list from Livability on the best downtowns in America. The research looked at over 2,000 small and mid-sized cities in the U.S., incorporating stats from the Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, mapping software company Esri and others. The study took into consideration factors like development, influx of people, vacancy rates, population, income, nightlife, affordability, walkability and diversity. Alexandria, Virginia, ranked top on the list.

The study points out that America’s downtowns have made a comeback during the past several decades, and Tempe is no exception. In addition to flourishing small businesses, the city is also now home to major companies like LifeLock, Waste Management and Silicon Valley Bank.

Increased high-rise development has opened up the city’s housing options, and a fun and active downtown makes Tempe’s downtown a cultural hub for the area.

In addition to heavy development, housing and economic growth, the city further benefits from Arizona’s business-friendly economic environment, named one of the top in the country for low taxes and regulations.
