Governor Calls Special Session For Action on 10 Bills

Date: May 21, 2016

NFIB/Alaska State Director Denny DeWitt reports from the State Capitol on the legislative week ending May 20, 2016

Small business has a couple of days to take its breath. The Legislature adjourned May 18, but was called back into special session by Gov. Bill Walker starting Monday, May 23.
The governor listed 10 items he wants the Legislature to address in his proclamation calling it back for more work. One is re-institution of a personal income tax, which NFIB remains strongly opposed to.
On the desk of the governor is House Bill 125, which would control some cough medicines, require age limits and prescriptions, and levy significant fines for selling to someone under 18. NFIB is consulting with its members who have retail stores that sell cough medicines to gauge the potential impact HB 125 would have on them, and will lobby for the governor’s veto of the legislation if it adversely affects them.
