What you need to know about Indiana’s Senate Select Committee on Immigration Issues.
Controversy? You bet. And they’re just getting started. This week the Indiana Senate kicked off its Select Committee on Immigration Issues. That the hearing quickly became contentious is no surprise to most. The issue of illegal immigration has become a hot-button (or should I say nuclear?) issue in the Presidential primary campaigns. It seems that everyone has a strong opinion on one side or the other and this special Senate study committee was bound to light a fire.
The hearing this week was the first of six hearings scheduled over the coming months. The stated objective is to study the issue and allow the public ample opportunity to weigh in and voice their opinions. During this first hearing, members of the committee heard from two immigration attorneys. The first, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, helped craft immigration laws in Arizona and Alabama, two states that are viewed as having some of the toughest immigration laws in the country. Also testifying was Dale Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of the Immigration Reform Law Institute.
The next hearing is scheduled for May 25, 2016 at 1:00pm in the statehouse. The agenda has not yet been posted but the chairman of the committee, State Senator Mike Delph, says that anyone who wishes to testify will have ample opportunity to do so during the six scheduled hearings.
