Linda McMahon seems poised to tackle regs and red tape as administrator of the Small Business Administration.
NFIB has argued time and again that the biggest challenge facing small business owners is overregulation and red tape. The Trump administration has already taken some of that issue to task, utilizing executive orders to curtail and halt some late Obama-era regulations, but it looks like one of the biggest allies for small business may be outside the Oval Office.

McMahon, the former WWE CEO, was confirmed as the new administrator of the Small Business Administration on February 14. This week, she appeared on CNBC to clarify why regulations are at the top of her to-do list.
“I think it’s really important as we hear from more and more of our small businesses to make our legislators aware of the regulatory environment,” said McMahon during the interview with CNBC. “Not that they’re not aware, but that they’re hearing more. A small business owner is apt to not only be the CEO, but the janitor and the bookkeeper and every other thing. And when you get reams of paper regulations that you have to comply with, and you don’t have the time or the expertise to do it and you don’t have the money to hire someone. The regulatory environment really can be stifling to small business owners that are trying to start up.”
McMahon mentioned that she was still currently gathering feedback on which regulations are harming small businesses the most.
NFIB research shows that overregulation is one of the top challenges for small businesses today.
“As you well know, the annual cost of federal regulation per employee is significantly higher for smaller firms than larger firms,” wrote NFIB president and CEO Juanita Duggan in a letter to Sen. James Lankford regarding the Small Business Regulatory Flexibility Improvements Act of 2017. “Federal regulations – not to mention state and local regulations – add up and significantly increase the cost of starting and running a small business.”
