NFIB member Roxanne Gallagher of Dover, Pennsylvania, started her business, Miss Lucy’s Dog Treats
after being laid off.
“I lost my job after
29 years and I thought I’d be there at a local business till I retired, so it
was a desperate need to find something to do,” said Roxanne.
Now ten years
later, Roxanne employs 2 full time employees and 2 part timers in the bakery
she operates from a garage next to her home.
Roxanne has a license with the Pennsylvania Department of
Agriculture to produce her dog treats and she must have each recipe analyzed
and labeled accordingly. But like many
small-business owners, she found the rules and regulations can be
oppressive and make it hard to expand to sell product in other states.
“So every state your small business has to be
licensed in order for your small business to become big. That’s one of my biggest issues with trying
to expand the business. If I was licensed
in all 50 states it would probably cost me 300 thousand a year.”
