Would You Like To Talk To The Media?

Date: November 17, 2015

One of the things that makes NFIB “this country’s premiere trade association,” as new president and CEO Juanita Duggan calls us, is the quality of information, and the articulation of it, that our lobbyists in Washington, D.C. and in Lincoln provide the media nationally and here in Nebraska.
But there’s a small-business group that speaks with even more authority and commands even more respect with reporters—NFIB members. People like you.
For that reason, NFIB always welcomes members who want to take the extra step for the small-business community by speaking to the media on issues that matter to small-business survival. And also on matters more promotional and celebratory, such as the upcoming Small Business Saturday on November 28.
Most media are not interested in got-you questions. The vast majority of reporters need a quote fast for a story they have file immediately before moving on to another story not even related to small business.
Still, it’s understandable why most people are not comfortable talking to reporters. The best way to end the unease is to know you can always say, “I don’t want to comment on that,” or “I’m not the person to speak on that,” or “Let me get back to you on that.”
Remember, except for the national media, the reporters you encounter live and work in your community and are not interested in making enemies of their small-business owning neighbors.
If you don’t mind talking to the media, drop NFIB Member Support Manager Stephanie Wentz an email here and let her know you’d be interested. Also let her know if you would always like to be notified of a media question first, or if it’s all right to just give the reporter your contact information. She’ll share your information with NFIB Regional Media Manager Tony Malandra.
UPCOMING OPPORTUNITY: Small Business Saturday, Amex and NFIB’s annual campaign to pull some of the shopping away from the malls and on to Main Street. Reporters will be looking for local comment.
